Autumn Tile Renovation Checklist: Get Your Home Ready Before Christmas
Share
Autumn is a brilliant time to tackle those decorating jobs you have been meaning to do before Christmas. Whether it is a tired hallway, a kitchen splashback that needs a refresh or a bathroom you would love to sort before guests arrive, starting now means far less last-minute panic in December.
A little planning goes a long way with tiling. Choosing your tiles is the fun part, but you will also need to think about measurements, preparation, adhesive, grout, delivery times and, if you are using one, booking your tiler.
So, if you are hoping for a fresh new look before the festive season, here is our practical autumn tile renovation checklist to help you get everything done in plenty of time.
Why Autumn Is a Great Time to Start a Tiling Project
It is tempting to think a tiling project starts with choosing a colour, but there is usually a little more to it than that.
You may need to order samples, prepare the surface, work out how many tiles you need, choose the right adhesive and grout, and allow enough time for everything to be installed and cured properly.
Starting in autumn gives you a bit of breathing space. You can make decisions without rushing, deal with any unexpected hiccups and still have time for the finishing touches before the Christmas decorations come out.
It is also worth checking stock, delivery times and installer availability early, particularly if you have a fixed date in mind for getting everything finished.
September and Early Autumn: Make a Plan
Start by thinking about the areas that will make the biggest difference to your home over Christmas. You do not need to renovate the whole house. One well-chosen room can make a huge impact.
- Choose your priority: Hallways, kitchens, downstairs toilets and guest bathrooms are all good candidates for a pre-Christmas refresh.
- Measure the space: Note the length, width and height, plus any doors, windows, sockets, units, fixtures or awkward corners.
- Decide on the look: Are you thinking classic metro tiles, large-format porcelain, stone effect, patterned tiles or something with a little more colour?
- Order samples: Tiles can look very different at home compared with a screen or showroom. See how they work with your lighting, worktops, paint colours and furniture.
- Check suitability: Make sure your chosen tile is suitable for where you want to use it, whether that is a wall, floor, bathroom, wet area or outdoor space.

October: Order Your Tiles and Get the Room Ready
Once you have found your tiles, it is a good idea to order everything you need for the project at the same time rather than discovering halfway through that you are missing grout, trim or adhesive.
Your tiler or tile supplier can help you work out quantities and allow for cuts and wastage, particularly if you are using a more complicated pattern or working with an awkward room shape.
Do Not Forget the Tiling Essentials
- The right adhesive for your tile, surface and room.
- Grout in a colour that works with the finished look.
- Tile spacers, trims, levelling products and installation tools.
- Sealant where needed around edges, corners and movement joints.
- Backer boards, waterproofing or preparation products if the surface requires them.
You can find grout, adhesive, tools and more in our Tiling Accessories collection.
The Best Rooms to Refresh Before Christmas
1. Hallways and Entrances

Your hallway works hard, especially once autumn brings muddy shoes, wet coats and plenty of people coming through the door.
A porcelain floor tile can be a practical, easy-care option, while stone-effect and patterned designs can give the entrance to your home a completely new look.
Always check that your chosen tile is suitable for floors and take a look at its slip-resistance information. A decent entrance mat is also worth its weight in gold once the Welsh weather sets in.
2. Kitchen Splashbacks

If you want maximum impact without ripping out the whole kitchen, changing the splashback is a great place to start.
Metro tiles work brilliantly if you want colour, pattern or a classic look, while larger tiles can create a cleaner finish with fewer grout lines.
Before installation, think about where cuts will fall around sockets, cupboards and corners. Grout colour matters too. A contrasting grout can completely change the appearance of the same tile, while a closer colour match gives a softer, more seamless finish.
3. Downstairs Toilets
A downstairs loo is often one of the quickest rooms to transform, which makes it ideal if Christmas is creeping closer.
You could create a tiled feature behind the basin, go halfway up the walls or tile the whole room for a more dramatic finish. Smaller spaces are also a great place to be a little braver with colour or pattern.
4. Guest Bathrooms

If you have friends or family staying over Christmas, refreshing the bathroom can make the whole house feel more polished.
Large-format tiles can create a clean, streamlined look with fewer grout lines, while metros, textured tiles and decorative designs are perfect for adding interest to shower areas and feature walls.
For bathroom floors, make sure the tile is designed for floor use and check its slip-resistance rating. Our anti-slip ratings guide explains what the different ratings mean and what to look for.
5. Utility Rooms and Boot Rooms

These rooms may not get as much attention as the kitchen or bathroom, but they have to put up with a lot.
A hard-wearing, easy-to-clean floor tile can make a big difference in a utility room or boot room, particularly during the wetter months. Look for something suited to the amount of foot traffic and moisture the room is likely to see.
November: Get the Tiling Done
By November, ideally your tiles and accessories have arrived and you are ready to get started.
Try not to leave installation until the week before Christmas. Adhesive and grout both need time to cure properly, and there is always a chance you will need an extra trim, another bag of adhesive or a little paint touch-up once the job is finished.
Before tiling begins, check that:
- The surface is clean, sound and properly prepared.
- You are happy with the proposed tile layout.
- You know where the main cuts and grout lines will fall.
- The correct adhesive and grout are ready to use.
- Furniture, fixtures and appliances have been moved or protected.
- Your tiler has the product information they need.
December: Clean, Finish and Enjoy It
December is much better spent enjoying your finished room than trying to complete a major renovation while also wondering where you put the Christmas lights.
Once everything has cured properly, give the tiles their final clean, refit any accessories and add those small finishing touches that make the room feel complete.
- Touch up paint around tile trims and edges.
- Add a good-quality mat to a newly tiled hallway.
- Keep kitchen worktops simple so your new splashback can shine.
- Use lighting to bring out texture or a feature wall.
- Store a few spare tiles somewhere safe in case you ever need them.
How Many Tiles Should You Order?
Start by measuring the area carefully, but do not order exactly the number of tiles needed to cover it.
You will normally need some extra for cuts, breakages and future repairs. How much extra depends on the shape of the room, tile size and laying pattern.
Patterns such as herringbone or diagonal layouts can involve more cutting, while large-format tiles may need additional planning around room proportions, veining and positioning.
If you are unsure, ask us or speak to your tiler before ordering. It is much easier to get the quantity right at the start than try to find matching tiles from the same batch later.
Your Pre-Christmas Tiling Checklist
- Decide which room will make the biggest difference.
- Measure the space and note any awkward areas.
- Order tile samples and look at them in your own home.
- Check that the tiles are suitable for the wall, floor or room you have chosen.
- Confirm stock, delivery times and your tiler's availability.
- Order tiles, adhesive, grout, trims and preparation products together.
- Agree the layout before installation starts.
- Allow enough time for adhesive and grout to cure.
- Finish any decorating and cleaning.
- Put your feet up and enjoy your Christmas-ready room.
