Tips for the Perfect Garden Makeover
Have a look through our customer case studies for inspiration, or browse through Pinterest or Instagram.
Think of how you will use your space. Do you need an area for children or pets to play in? A space to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs or flowers?
Do you have time for the upkeep required for grass and foliage?
Think of where you get the sun in your garden. That can often be a starting point to work out where any garden furniture can go.
When choosing tiles, anti slip properties are a good choice, for reassurance underfoot.
Bringing the Indoors Outside
There's nothing better than a comfy corner to relax in on a hot summer's day, like Samantha Brady's stunning outside living area in her gorgeous garden makeover in Cheshire. The wood effect anti-slip tiles not only look great, but they are a practical alternative to decking, and will put up strong resistance against the great British weather. Samantha has carried through the grey theme from her house and added gorgeous accessories that can be easily changed to freshen the look, such as wooden planters and flower walls.
Samantha and her family moved into their new build home in February 2019, and the garden makeover was one of their first projects. She decided to create an outside living room and scoured Pinterest for ideas.
As Samantha had wooden decking in a previous home and hadn't enjoyed the maintenance of painting and replacing it, leading her to choose Maryland tiles in grey. She framed the area with wooden sleepers, and painted the fence with Cuprinol Silver Copse to make it feel more like a room. A rattan sofa set and a BBQ makes it the perfect space to entertain guests. "I love how our garden ‘living room’ turned out, it’s such a relaxing place to sit. My little boy uses it as a stage! Everyone comments on how lovely the tiles are."

Glorious Greek Taverna
During her holiday in Skiathos, Greece, customer Susan dreamed of recreating the holiday vibe back home in Derbyshire. The garden in her new build house was a blank canvas with just a lawn, giving plenty of scope for a transformation. When she got back home, she and her husband sketched their concepts separately, and as the ideas matched, the taverna was born. Yamas!
Susan's husband Neil is a builder, so he set to work on building and rendering. They wanted the floor tiles to reflect the Mediterranean feel, so a rustic-style tile with a matching decor section was the perfect solution. Not only did they look the part, but they were also hardwearing, practical and weatherproof.
Susan says: "We are thrilled with the result and now have a real taste of Greece on a sunny day in Derbyshire!"

Fabulous Feature Wall
By adding a garden feature wall in your garden makeover, you can make it look summer-ready all year. Why not liven up a drab wall with some split face tiles, as customer Timotina has done in her Sheffield garden makeover to great effect? They'll not only look great, but they'll also be a functional addition that will last for years.
Timotina says: "We bought our house a few years ago and started construction straight away. The garden of course we left until last and I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted it to look like. As it was quite a small garden, we decided to go for some light tiles to create more space and a garden feature wall. These gorgeous split face tiles did just that. I was thinking about what to get and from where, as it was lockdown and we had time to do some garden work."

Patio Perfection
We loved seeing our outdoor tiles featured in Bethan’s garden makeover. After buying their 1990s South Wales home in 2022, Bethan and her partner took on a full renovation, aiming for a “modern, yet classic” look. Their garden started as grass and ivy, but they dreamed of a patio “for hosting and enjoying summer days.”
The biggest challenge was finding the right tiles. They wanted “large, square, grey, porcelain outdoor tiles with a ‘washed’ look” and found the perfect match at Direct Tile Warehouse. Bethan said, “These tiles stood out due to their quality, aesthetic appeal, and competitive pricing.”
Their clever twist? Laying the tiles diagonally to “make the garden feel more spacious.” The result is a “beautiful, inviting garden, perfect for relaxing and entertaining. We LOVE the tiles so much!”
Transform an Area
Tiled garden walls are a new trend that quickly and easily elevates your outdoor space. Outdoor tiles can be utilised to dress up an existing wall, add texture, or conceal an unattractive feature, as Gemma did with excellent success in her garden makeover!
"We needed to transform a raised area in our garden. We were stuck with what to do about our tree roots so we decided to build a garden wall to cover them. The result has everyone commenting on our wall and it’s become the main feature!"

Glamorous Garden Room
We are yet to find an area of the home where marble effect tiles don't look good! Customer Richard from Heddington wanted to upgrade his four-bedroom bed detached property in the Wiltshire countryside and wanted to start by replacing the wooden conservatory with a new garden room. This is a great option, as it gives you a summer house feel whilst still being part of the house - ideal for sheltering from the sun (or rain).
Richard designed the room with the help of Leekes to be bright and spacious. He chose white marble-effect tiles to keep with the light and open theme and to complement the space.
"We loved the end result," he said. "We achieved the look we wanted and the effect is stunning. We've transformed our outdated conservatory into a sleek and functional new space, which is now a more useable living area."

Moroccan Inspired Patio
It's great when a customer calls for inspiration, we are only too happy to help! Naier wanted to create a stunning Moorish-style patio, and we had just the tiles in mind for his garden makeover. Using a mixture of decorative and plain Moorish-style tiles resulted in a look that wasn't just authentic, it was also completely unique.
Using decorative tiles is a wonderful way to add some interest to your patio space, especially when you can be so creative with the look. Add in some rattan furniture to relax on, a parasol for shade and a row of plants and the effect here is stunning. Not only are Moroccan-style tiles ideal for recreating that holiday feeling, but they are also hard-wearing, easy to clean and have plenty of grip underfoot.
If you're considering a garden makeover to overhaul your outdoor space, we have a great range of garden and patio tiles to choose from.
And if you need any advice or suggestions, email info@directtilewarehouse.com or message us on social media, we'd love to help with your garden makeover!
